That's right, you read that correctly. Life is better without facebook and I'll tell you why. Social media has made our society dumber and more narcissistic. People that use facebook religiously inevitably become obsessed with it. They get addicted to the false attention they receive.
Every time someone "likes" their comment or wall post they get a little ego boost that validates their need for love and approval. This is okay if the person is level headed but all too facebook creates post-crazy people that think everyone wants to know every little detail of their life that they spew up onto their wall like a spit wad.
Facebook is intriguing to many people because it's social commentary between people you care about in real time. However, people overdo it like so many other things and it becomes an ego fest with the type-a personalities dominating the post feeds.
People that are use facebook regularily could benefit from unplugging themselves from the website regularily. Try going 1 week without it, then 2, then a month. You'd be surprised how much time you wasted on facebook and you can put that time into more productive things ie. seeing and talking to people in real life and not on the internet.
My Facebook Free World
As it turns out there is life after facebook! I wanted to cancel my facebook account 8 months ago and have never been better, track my progress and see how someone lives in a facebook free world by cancelling their facebook account.

A Weak Moment Wall Post on My Wife's Facebook Profile
So I had a weak moment. I was just getting back from a trip in the BWCA (boundary waters canoe area) in Minnesota and had a fresh stash of beautiful new pictures. I really wanted to share them with friends, however of course now I have ostracized myself due to not being on facebook. No worries, I thought since my friends are mostly all my wife friends, I would post the pics and a map of where we went on hers.
That's where I made my mistake. See, my whole reason for cancelling my facebook account in the first place was because it was too invasive in my life. This again proved true and facebook reached it's ever reaching hand into our life again and disappointed us. My wife happens to be 13 weeks pregnant (see my pregnancy blog from a man's perspective - babyinmybaby.blogspot.com and she disabled wall posts on her wall. I don't really understand how this works but since I posted a new post on her wall it allowed a few select family members who knew about her pregnancy (the only ones she had told so far) to spill the beans because they now could post on her wall due to the new post that sort of overrided her preference to not allow wall posts.
So long story short, I was in the dog house for awhile, but eventually I got out like I always do. I learned my lesson though, never post on her wall, and never go on facebook anymore. It really is a social media phenomenon that has become way too big, too fast and has become too powerful. This has allowed facebook to take unprecedented advantage of people's personal information. Very rude facebook, very rude. After seeing the movie "A Social Network" I see why the company conducts themselves they way they do. I can only imagine what Mark Zuckerberg is like. What a punk! Sorry Mark, here's one person of a growing minority that neither want, or need your facebook.

There is life after Facebook after all!
I cancelled facebook 10 months ago now.
I then re-activated my account 9 months ago.
After another dissatisfying month I then re-cancelled 8 months ago and have been Facebook free now ever since.
I now live in a status update free world. It's really quite refreshing to NOT be forced to view the latest ultrasound pic, not-so-funny joke, or political argument.
Not to mention having a wealth of your personal information at risk on facebook. Stalkers are common, theives have watched profiles to see when the best time to break in to your house is, and kids' cell phones pictures are actively being geo-tagged to make it easy for perverts to track their physical locations. (parents if you're reading this, please look up how to disable geo-tagging feature from your kids cell phone)
The downside to cancelling is feeling out of touch with your friends, but that feeling passes as you realize most of what you talk about on social media is nonsense or ego-boosting, and many of the important things deserve a phone call or even a face to face meeting.
I'll let you know how this experiment goes. So far so good. So long face... book!
